Abstract

Major disasters (forest fires, floods, etc.) are currently occurring more and more frequently, posing new challenges for first responders and creating a strong need for new and innovative training methods.

The aim of M2D GmbH is to train the first responders in their VROnSite simulator that is as realistic, extensive and comprehensive as possible and that presents the entire situation as realistically as possible. On the one hand, this includes the import and display of extensive, real environment and terrain data from GIS systems. On the other hand, fire and smoke in particular and their spread in a forest fire scenario, but also other objects such as buildings, should be rendered as realistically as possible. Technically, this is a challenge on the mobile and inexpensive hardware of the VROnSite system, as the computing power is limited. As part of the we developed, an innovative technical concept that uses algorithmic optimizations to enable the simulation of large-scale disaster scenarios on the existing hardware.
