Abstract

Building Information Modeling (BIM) has been a leading tool introducing digitization into the construction industry. It has become so widely used that most of the newly designed buildings have their BIM models prepared prior to the construction phase. However, due to the complexity of the building process, occasional miscommunications and erroneous decisions, newly constructed buildings often do not follow the original BIM plans completely.

The goal of BIMCheck is to develop a workflow and software solutions that allow to compare the as-built state of a construction to its as-planned BIM model in a quick and user-friendly way. To do this, we developed a multi-component software solution that allows to collect point cloud scans of buildings with a LiDAR, either hand-held or mounted on the mobile Spot robot, match them to the original BIM model and calculate metrics describing found differences between the point cloud scan and the as-planned BIM model.  The outcomes are presented to the user in a visualization that can be viewed on desktop or extended to Mixed Reality solutions.
